o holy day
On Sunday, May 22, Will was baptized at St. Matthias Church here in Lincoln Square. The Moynihan clan flew out for the occasion (Grammy and Grampy, Auntie Erin, Uncle Andy, and cousin Danny), as well as Will's godparents, my sister Katie and our good friend Bob. Will's baptismal gown was sewn from the fabric of my mother's wedding dress, which, needless to say, was a very special touch. We felt so blessed to be surrounded by such loving family and friends to celebrate the beginning of our little boy's spiritual journey. My uncle Keith was the photographer of the day, and the following are some of his best shots.

will power
Back when Colin and I were deciding on a more permanent name for Wiggle, I was drawn to the name Will for it's multiple meanings. First, of course, because it was my grandfather's name, but also because of the meaning of the word will, as in, the strength of one's will, free will, or will power. At almost six months old, and one night into sleep training, Will's name has never seemed more appropriate. Indeed, our nights have become a battle of wills, between one screaming, alternately angry and silly little baby, versus two very sleep deprived parents and a shaking Boston terrier.
It comes down to this question: who's the boss? Until now, it's been Will. Hands down. We're totally dominated. And so, Wednesday night, after yet another night of waking up every two hours, and sometimes more frequently, Colin and I reached the conclusion that something needs to change. Someone needs to learn how to soothe himself.
I was most afraid of Will totally losing his mind and crying so hard that he threw up or passed out or had a coughing fit. But, after a few minutes of crying upon waking, he drifted off to sleep pretty easily. My little boy surprised me. The problem is, he woke up every hour, and then every half hour as morning broke. One issue is solved as a new one is born.
When it comes down to it though, a crazy, unfathomably tired part of me is proud of Will for being his fiery, complicated little self. I love his sensitive soul and every cry and scream that has come with it.
Wish us luck as we brace ourselves for sleep training night number two. Say a prayer for us. Send us some will power.
